Secure your projects with glue specially designed for wood

When choosing a suitable wood glue, it is important to look through the ingredient list. The main ingredient will affect its adhesive strength, resistance to water, viscosity, cure time and stain absorption.

If you’re new to woodworking, here is how each of the factors will affect your project:

  • Adhesive strength – Some glues are made to be stronger than others. For example, cyanoacrylate glue (also known as CA glue) is strong but brittle. This means that wood joints will break with a few taps from a hammer and is only good for creating temporary joints.
  • Resistance to water – Depending on where you want your final project to be placed, you will need to consider the glue’s resistance to water. Ingredients such as polyurethane is suitable for indoor and outdoor use due to its waterproof properties.
  • Viscosity – If you are planning to fix small cracks, choosing a product with high viscosity will allow it to flow through and fill up the gap easily.
  • Cure time – Some glues, like CA glue, dry almost instantaneously while others may take up to 24 hours to dry. If you are readjusting or realigning wood pieces, it is advisable to opt for one with a longer cure time.
  • Stain absorption – Some glues such as PVA do not absorb stains well. This means that the glue will show if you choose to stain the wood after piecing it together.
