Grown and Harvested in Singapore

Fast-growing and planted in Singapore back in the 1970s. Well known for its massive and straight trunk, it can be easily spotted along most expressways in Singapore i.e. BKE, PIE, and AYE.

General description: Sapwood is yellowish-brown. Heartwood is pink when freshly sawn, turning pink-brown or dark brown when exposed.

Grain: Usually interlocked.

Texture: is moderately coarse.

Common Uses: Suitable for furniture, cabinetry work, high-quality decorative veneer, panelling, boat decking, flooring, and light construction.

Our recommendation

Commonly used as shelving, DIY work of items like tissue boxes, cutting boards, dining tables, and benches. It has a distinct bright orange/red colour when treated with colourless oil-based varnish. Colour can vary from light orange to dark brown depending on the age and sub-species of the mahogany.

Known for its massive trunk, locally harvested mahogany can sometimes be made into a 1-piece dining table of approximately 2m x 0.8m. For a dining table of this size, the recommended thickness is usually a minimum of 70mm so as to minimize the deformation of wood over time. However, such pieces need to be pre-ordered at least 6 months in advance to allow enough time for drying.

Skilled carpenters would sometimes love to use these pieces as cabinets, shelves, or even cutting boards. Readily available kiln-dried pieces are mostly smaller and shorter.

Common sizes available

Pre-ordered pieces can be up to 2.5m x 0.9m x 0.08m in size.

Commonly available kiln dried pieces are

200mm x 20mm x 4ft – 5ft

200mm x 35mm x 4ft – 5ft
